01 — The Constant
α = 1⁄137
α⁻¹ = 137.035999177(21) — CODATA 2022
In 1916, Arnold Sommerfeld introduced a small, dimensionless number into physics — one with no units, born from no single measurement, that kept appearing wherever electricity, light, and matter met. He called it the fine-structure constant.
α = e² ⁄ 4πε0ħc
Every unit inside it cancels against another, which is what makes it strange: it is the same number whether measured in meters or miles, in this galaxy or any other — a pure ratio the universe appears to have chosen on its own, independent of anyone measuring it.
The most precise determination to date puts it at α⁻¹ = 137.035999206(11) — accurate to 81 parts in a trillion. A team at the Kastler Brossel Laboratory in Paris reached it in 2020 by tracking the recoil of a single rubidium atom struck by a photon of light, a test precise enough to constrain the existence of particles no one has ever seen.
“…the ‘hand of God’ wrote that number, and we don’t know how He pushed his pencil.” Richard Feynman, QED: The Strange Theory of Light and Matter, 1985
Arthur Eddington believed the opposite of Feynman — that 137 could be reached by pure reason alone, without a single experiment. He built an elaborate proof around the exact integer. The universe disagreed: as instruments improved, the true value settled at 137.036, not 137 on the nose. His theory did not survive contact with better measurement.
Wolfgang Pauli spent much of his career trying to explain why the number was what it was. He died in hospital room 137.
A pure number. No units. No label. A hidden setting in the structure of reality.
